Being a nerd used to be expensive.

Deep knowledge in any field took years, sometimes decades. You learned the terminal commands. You studied the technologies, the formulas, the materials, the way one system talks to another. And even once you knew all that, the details still ate you alive. One gotcha setting up a database could cost you a whole day.

So most good ideas never got out of our heads. We nerdy types had plenty of ideas. What we did not have was the hours in the day to execute on them. Most of us did not have the capital to build them either, or the desire to go and raise it. The idea stayed a notebook entry, a late-night conversation, a “one day”.

The moment it changed for me

At the start of 2026 it became evident that the world would never be the same again.

I rebuilt a website in Claude Code in a couple of days. I have built a lot of websites, so this was not beginner’s luck. I knew what I wanted. I had the taste, and I knew enough to guide it. Claude Code took care of the rest, like a genuinely good mid-senior developer.

That was when my eyes opened. The things I had never had time to learn were no longer standing between me and what I wanted to build. The judgement was still mine. The years of learning every gotcha were no longer the entry fee.

It is not just code

Here is a smaller example.

I can open a voice session with Claude or ChatGPT and dictate my wildest ideas in complex, abstract detail. The kind of rambling, half-formed thinking that would once have taken me a day to tidy into something anyone else could follow. After fifteen minutes, the AI summarises it back to me: organised, tidy, not missing any detail or nuance. Often it adds to what I said, in genuinely helpful ways.

That used to be the job of a patient colleague with a free afternoon. Now it is fifteen minutes and a microphone.

So let’s celebrate

There is a lot of worry about AI, and some of it is fair. But I want to make the case for celebrating this new world, because I think we are about to see something wonderful.

There will be new and better products, built by people who understand a problem deeply and could never before afford to build the answer. Ideas that never saw daylight will get their chance. And scientific discoveries and processes that used to be a life’s work will become manageable projects for a small team.

I am not exaggerating. The cost of turning deep knowledge into something real has collapsed. The bottleneck is no longer the hours, the capital or knowing the right people. It is the idea, and the curiosity to follow it.

Welcome back, nerds

If you are the kind of person with a head full of ideas and a notebook full of “one day”, this is your moment. Time, capital and connections are no longer the barrier they were. You have the tools to do the wildest things you have ever thought of.

And if you have an idea you have been sitting on and want help working out the first step, send me what you have. I would love to hear it.
